Every day, Abby’s Angels Animal Haven gives second chances to animals who’ve been abandoned, neglected, or simply forgotten. As a small, volunteer-run rescue, we rely on community support to fund medical care, transport, food, and safe foster homes.

Clover’s Story: A Fighter Then, A Fighter Now

Some of you may remember Clover. Clover came to us four years ago and we found she had issues right off the bat. And then two years ago, she and Tommy spent 12 days in the icu with canine influenza, aspiration pneumonia from being sick, and then she developed an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection in her lungs and needed to stay on oxygen for 10 days.

Clover is very special, not just to me, but to the rescue and our rescue family as a whole. She has remained under the care of the rescue due to her medical issues. While she has a mom and dad and a family, she has been the face and the heart on earth of our organization. Abby is the reason this organization began and gave me my life purpose, Clover has been the reason I have been able to continue this work in the face of all the devastation, heartbreak, frustration and exhaustion it brings with it.

On Wednesday, Clover went to Pittsburgh for an MRI and spinal tap.

She started having some stiffness after Christmas. We did X-rays and her hips are disastrous. We’ve known they were bad since she was about 6-8 weeks old. We knew eventually she would need surgery for them—either an FHO or total hip replacement.

She started some supplements, got some pain meds, and started a joint specific food in January. She was doing pretty well until about 2.5 weeks ago. Then she started falling. Having trouble getting up. Her back legs unable to support her squatting to use the bathroom. Crossing her back legs and her hips swaying when she walked.

I called her vet. Exactly two weeks ago I sent videos of her gait and issues. Last week we went in for more X-rays and evaluation and were referred to Dr Scoda, a board certified neurologist in Pittsburgh.

We went over everything it could be prior, I prepped myself for outcomes of degenerative disease, ruptured disks, IVDD, meningitis, another congenital disease, myasthenia gravis, degenerative myelopathy …. But I didn’t and wasn’t prepared for what they found.

Clover has a tumor around her spinal cord, between T11 & T12 vertebrae. Basically right in the middle of her spine. In the MRI photos below, the third photo shows normal spinal cord looking at it as though you sliced into a pumpkin roll. The fourth photo shows the area the tumor is compressing on her spine. The fifth photo is the tumor itself.

Her spinal tap didn’t provide much additional information, but the best guess currently is that it is malignant, and is a plaque meningioma.

So, what are our options?

We do palliative care and give her the best month-months we can possibly give her.

We choose to fight. With surgery. With radiation.

This dog, is so much more than a dog to me. And she has been through more in her four short years of life than most see in a lifetime. She has been a magnet for every and any rare or out of the norm thing that can go on with one dog. Esophageal dysmotility. We get through one challenge and she says, “hold my cakes, we have another I can try.” Osteochondritis dessicans in her shoulder cartilage. Shoulder surgery to remove bone fragments from the diseased cartilage. Canine influenza that morphed into a bacterial resistant strain of pneumonia, a lung wash, that left her in critical intensive care on high flow oxygen for just shy of two weeks and had to come home on an antibiotic so strong for three months that I had to wear gloves to administer it. Luxating patellas. Severe hip dysplasia. And now this.

She has ALWAYS fought. Always. She has defied odds, she has surpassed expectations of everyone. She has shown that when given the opportunity to be a warrior, she steps up swinging and surprises us all.

And so, we have decided to let her fight once more. She is young. She is happy. She has a great appetite. She’s still sassy. It was caught early.

The neurologist believes it has been growing only a few weeks-a month.

She will be having spinal surgery within the next 1-2 weeks. She will heal from that and then beginn radiation therapy. Her surgery is estimated at 5-6k. Radiation at 10k.

There is a chance surgery will result in a decline. But it’s fact that without surgery she absolutely will decline. The surgery is not curative. The plan is to remove as much of the tumor as possible, send for biopsy to get an exact histopatholgy, and then try to shrink the rest as much as possible to give her a few more years of sassiness and attitude at not getting everything she wants. Even with all of this, it may come back. Sooner rather than later, but also maybe later.

Clover has defied the odds time and time again. I’m hoping she has one more in her. And I’m hoping you will be here for support. She’s going to need her Crew.

As for me, I’m upset of course, but I’m mostly angry. None of this girls life has been fair, has been easy, and I’m angry she has to go through one more hurdle and can’t just enjoy life going to the beach for a few days, eating pup cakes, and pup cups, and yelling at me every day. I’m angry that she is sooo special, and has been dealt so much crap.

But I’m thankful. That we have support. That we have the option and ability to pursue treatment. That she is still here. That I love her so much more than I could ever express that I will do whatever she needs me to do for always to make her comfortable, happy and make sure her quality of life is always taken into account. That she’s a sassy ball of fire who CAN overcome this. That I was blessed to have her come into my life and change it the way not many can. That she exists.

I will continue to update as things happen, are scheduled, and change. Daily on her page, but major updates too.

But what i want in return is for you to please forgo the “I’m sorry” and also any sad comments. I know it’s people trying to be compassionate, i know everyone is going to be sad. But what We truly need is for you to fight, to stand with us, to pray. Is it sad, yes? And no one’s life is more affected than mine over this. But we need strength. We need faith. We need to lift her up, and get through. We need an army to fight alongside.

We’re up for the challenge. I hope you can be too.

Update 1/24/2025: 8 Puppies Diagnosed with Parvo

It is the nightmare scenario we hoped we would never face. Unfortunately, it has become our devastating reality—every single one of the eight puppies in our care has tested positive for parvovirus.

The battle has already been brutal. Three of the puppies—Pickle, Pancake, and Waffle—deteriorated so quickly that they required nasogastric tubes to be placed. The veterinary team initially hoped the others could manage with supportive care, but one by one, every single pup declined overnight.

Now, all eight puppies are on IV fluids, receiving critical medications, and undergoing bloodwork. The fight is exhausting, but we will not give up on them.

The Cost of Survival

Parvo is relentless, and treatment is costly. Bacon, one of the puppies, already has a dangerously low white cell count, a sign of just how aggressive this virus can be.

The financial burden is staggering. The estimated cost of care ranges from $25,795 on the low end to $44,337 on the high end —a crippling amount for any rescue. This is not just devastating for these puppies but for every other dog currently in our care. If we cannot raise these funds, it could jeopardize our ability to continue saving lives in the future.

Yes, the cost is high. Treating just one parvo-positive puppy can run between $3,000 and $5,000 . However, we firmly stand behind our veterinary team. They have dedicated their lives to saving animals, and they work tirelessly to provide discounts and the best possible care for rescues like ours. This is not the place to debate veterinary costs—this is where we fight for these lives.

We Treat, or We Don’t—And We Choose to Fight

When we pulled these puppies from the euthanasia list, we made a commitment to give them a chance at life. That hasn’t changed. The reality is simple: we either treat them, or we don’t. And not treating them is not an option .

As the weather cools down, things are heating up at Bedford Elks Country Club! Starting November 19, every Tuesday night brings the thrill of friendly competition, community spirit, and a chance to support a great cause with the Winter Cornhole Tournaments. The tournaments will be held at the Bedford Elks Country Club, located at 937 S Richard St., Bedford, PA. From Hoarding to Healing: 17 Bedford County Dogs Now at Abby's Angels

At this point in time, everyone is aware that the Bedford County Humane Society took in most of the dogs from the hoarding case last night. There were over 90 dogs in the home, their conditions filthy, disgusting and beyond words. Central PA Humane Society took some of those dogs (I’m not sure of the number they took at this time), to free up some space and get care for the ones they transferred in.

We also offered assistance. I arrived at the humane society first thing and spent hours bathing, cutting mats, scanning for microchips, cleaning, and working on foster care. Several of our fosters and volunteers also helped today, in addition to many in the community.

At this time, we have taken in 17 of those dogs. We are massively thankful to D'tails Professional Dog & Cat Salon & Resort who offered to take three of the worst in need of grooming care to foster and care for, for us at this time.

Thank you to the staff from VMC-Drs. Karen and Amber for coming to check them all out today, to Megan, Natalie and Jess for spending time helping assist and being amazing.

I plan to go back out tomorrow to see if there are any others in dire need of help that we can assist with.

The Bedford Humane Society, even though some of the dogs have been transferred out, will still need volunteers to help clean and walk dogs in the coming weeks. If you are able to help them, please do, but please also be aware that these dogs had their whole worlds (even though they were living in an awful situation) turned upside down and need patience and some calmness. If there seem to be a bunch of people there, maybe come back at a different time so that the dogs are not being overwhelmed by a ton of strangers. They will need continued help.

As far as the ones now in our care, we would like to introduce them. They will need extensive vetting and are no where near ready for adoption, so please do not ask at this time, or ask if we’ll contact you when they are. We are not currently accepting applications. We need to ensure they are HEALTHY, don’t have lifelong complications or need medications and are ready for a home. When that time comes, they will be posted on this page as we do with every dog. They have infections, they have lice, they need X-rays, bloodwork, dental care, vaccines. They need time to breathe, to settle, to know they are safe.

Our dogs will need help with vetting costs. We’ll also need some food—the brands we’ll need currently are:

We need to take a moment to tell those new to our page what WE do and how our process works. We have taken in a substantial number of the dogs from BCHS which we are absolutely thankful to have been able to do, and are thankful they accepted our help.

First and foremost though, these dogs need vet care. They all needed grooming, which Amanda and her team at D'tails Professional Dog & Cat Salon & Resort have done a fabulous job with and has been amazing with helping us out.

Many of these dogs need EXTENSIVE vet care.

What we do pertaining to this—all of the dogs in our care will have bloodwork done, they will be 4dx tested. They will have X-rays, they will have skin scrapes, they will have fecal testing and be dewormed, they will receive a rabies vaccine, 2 dhlpp vaccines, a kennel cough vaccine, Lyme vaccine and booster, Canine influenza vaccine and booster. They will have dental surgeries. They will have medications. They have lice and need treated. They will have eye issues addressed. They will have repeat vet visits. They will be neutered/spayed depending on the sex of the dog. We will need to ensure they are HEALTHY, with no lifelong issues that will need addressed. We will need to ensure that they are MENTALLY ready for a new home.

Every dog we have taken in, has a foster home that has been approved and gone through our fostering process. Most of them are seasoned foster homes who have experience with medical care. They will take the time to get to know these dogs and their personalities, their likes, their dislikes.

The dogs that came in, may not be the same dogs in three weeks. Once they feel better and are healthy, they may not have the same personality as they did the day they arrived. They may not like other dogs. They may not like cats. They may not like people, children.

But THEY need time to decompress, to become whole again, to get the care they need, and to show us who they are and what they will need before we will begin accepting any applications at all for them.

Our veterinary team will spend days and dozens and dozens of hours helping us treat their wounds, their skin, their teeth. They will need THOUSANDS of dollars worth of care and treatment.

Until that has been completed, they will stay in our care.

We know everyone wants to help, we know there may have been dogs you have met, or “fallen in love” with, however, none of us know the true personalities of these dogs. Not yet. There is no way to know that at this time. They haven’t had the time and the opportunity to show and decide who they are yet.

As a rescue, our responsibility is always to the dogs. They come first. They will always come first. We will ensure that each dog is healthy, and that each dog will go to a home that is best suited for THEIR needs. A dog you may want, may not be a dog that is suited for your home. Please give us the time, to give THEM the time to show us what they need.

We appreciate the outpouring of support and the hearts of everyone offering to help. You have no idea how grateful we are.

But we need to make sure that these dogs are treated, and ensure they never again end up in a situation like one they came from, or one that isn’t the best for them. Please allow us that time.

Any applications sent for these dogs, will not be looked at, at this time. When they are available, we will post on our page, on our website. Please do not apply at this time to try to get ahead of someone else. That’s not how we operate. We are not first come first serve. We place dogs in the homes best suited for their needs and personalities.

When there are updates, we will post them.

But at this time, we have given all the information on them that we can. They just need time to learn that life isn’t so bad, and that they will from here on out will only know love. We will ensure it.

We do have other dogs who have been waiting awhile for homes. They can be found under the “meet our angels” photo album or on our website. Those are the only dogs we are currently accepting applications for.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this tragedy and work on making it into something positive for these kiddos. And again, thank you all for your support.

Sweet Little Saint Nick Makes His Way to the Haven

The Sunday after Noelle passed, I saw a shelter Director put out a plea for help for this boy below. I knew it was only a matter of time before another soul would need the care and love that she elicited.. and he was the one.

A large team effort went into effect. Jamie from The Cleveland-Bolivar County Animal Shelter of Mississippi and her team got him vaccinated and ready. Mark from Code3 Animal Rescue Aviation Team pulled out his Santa hat and went to work making the sleigh rides happen. He coordinated with Captains Paul, Catesby and Dewey and Pilots N Paws to get a flight plan cleared.

The weather didn’t cooperate well for the first planned trip, but today, everything came together and sweet little Saint Nick made his way to the Haven.

Nick is a young boy around 6 months old, possibly has some shep and a bunch of other things floating around in that DNA. He has Demodex mange. He is emaciated and has lots of weight to gain. His back legs have a habit of crossing when he walks. That may improve with the right nutrition as he heals. He’s tiny right now for his size and age, less than 30 lbs. But we’ll fix that. We’ll fix his skin. We’ll work on his confidence and manners. We’ll work on his socialization and skills. We’ll get him all ready, to find a home of his very own.

We are grateful for everyone who came together to get this boy into our arms. And we know Noelle is smiling down knowing that she helped saved another soul in need. This one’s for you sweet girl.

A Dog Facing Certain Death Due to Starvation if Someone Didn’t Step Up

9/29/2023: When I was young, I became fascinated and immersed in Greek and Roman mythology, in astronomy. I wanted to know every story, every star and constellation, and a fire burned inside of me to consume all the knowledge I could find.

A few of those stories are my favorites, a few exemplify the current world and it’s happenings. The wars, the punishments, the compassion, the sadness, the joy, the heartache, the strength, the endurance, the battle, all that was overcome, all that was lost, all that was gained and the ever lasting impression left upon those it surrounds.

Wednesday night, one of our shelter partners put out a plea. A dog severely neglected, severely emaciated. A dog facing certain death due to starvation if someone didn’t step up, if it wasn’t someone experienced in refeeding, if it didn’t happen now. I thought about him all night and all of Thursday morning, and I couldn’t think anymore…. I had to do. I texted and made the call. He could come to me. I couldn’t let this boy go to someone who has never had a dog this thin, someone who has never had experience with a refeeding schedule. Because while intentions are always good, the truth is, feeding him too much, too fast, putting on weight too quickly WILL cause his death. It has to be calculated. It has to be slow. It has to be measured, monitored. It has to be intricate, intentional. Too many calories will cause his body to shut down. His organs will go into failure. Too much water, he’ll develop bloat, vomit. Treats will send him over the minuscule fine line of not enough and too much. Not everyone is equipped, not everyone is capable of saving a dog in shape as bad as he is. And even then, he could still crash quickly, and we could lose him. But I will do everything in my power, everything humanly possible, to make sure he comes out on the other side.

I drove today to pick him up. I had names picked out. But when they pulled in, I changed my mind. I knew the perfect name for this beautiful boy.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was punished for the Titans trying to overthrow Zeus. He was sentenced to hold up the world on his shoulders for eternity. Letting go would end in certain death. It Would be the end game for not only himself, but all life. Atlas was forced to carry the burdens of the world, never taking a rest, never slowing down, never giving up. His strength and endurance prevailed and was unmatched. So this beautiful boy, who has carried the burdens placed upon him by vile human beings. This boy who carried chains around his neck, never resting, never giving up, always prevailing, showing unmatched strength and endurance to live, to survive despite every thing life threw his way and more…. His name will be Atlas.

But. The difference is, he will no longer have to carry those chains, those burdens. We have taken them off of his shoulders, and I have placed them on my own. I will be strong enough for him, we will be strong enough for him. I will endure whatever now comes his way, he just needs to rest. To relax. To heal. To know that he never again has to worry about saving himself. Because I will do anything possible to do it for him.

*the details can not be shared since this is an ongoing police investigation, but what can be shared is he was left chained in a yard intentionally, left to starve.

He is going to need a multitude of tests and care. Despite his condition, and it is literally the worst I’ve ever seen in person, he is strong. He is resilient. He is happy. He is sweet. He has a wonderful appetite. He is using the bathroom normally. He was in the hospital yesterday but he does not need continued hospitalization at this time as being there with no immunity (he has not been vaccinated previously and his body has fought so hard to just live that he can not fight off infection at this time) could cause a greater risk to his health. As long as he continues to eat, drink and use the bathroom on his schedule with no issues and no dehydration, he will return to the vet on Monday for bloodwork and further evaluation. He is loaded with hookworm. He is heartworm positive. He needs to gain about 30 lbs minimum and that will take some time.

He is going to need a LOT of medical intervention, visits and care. So we are asking that 100 people donate twenty five dollars in his name to cover his vetting. We will keep track and make a list and post a final one. We can’t do this without you. He can’t do this without you.

Update 10/1/2023

We would like to shout out a huge THANK YOU to each and every person who has sent ten bucks or more to help Atlas. We originally asked for one hundred people to send twenty five, but we have included anyone who has sent any amount for his care, and also the care of Nigel & Lincoln.

This does not include those who have or said they they have mailed checks (we haven’t received them yet to add them). But we have raised 4000 of our now 7500 goal for the three of them. We appreciate you so very much. We still have a little way to go, but we’re over halfway there. These boys deserve all the help you can muster.

Atlas will be going to the vet in the morning. Today, I gave him a Barkbox super chewer toy that has fabric on the outside and a toy on the inside, and he has been carrying it around all day as though it is the best gift he has ever gotten. He even took it outside to the bathroom.

Nigel and Lincoln are also settling in and eating well. Both have been ravenous and despite that, are on slow, refeeding schedules. Nigel has passed several shreds of blanket, a few plastic bottle caps and a hair tie in his stools. He has no other signs of blockage but will be closely monitored. Lincoln is enjoying rolling around in the grass with his new foster sisters.

Update 10/10/2023

Atlas is enjoying his cozy sweatshirts, sweaters, blankets and jacket that were sent for him, especially since it’s been extra chilly here in PA!

He’s been on a re-feed schedule, and has gained just over two pounds. And as you can see, two pounds makes a world of difference on his frame since it previously was just bone and skin. He is doing so, so well. He has an amazing spirit and zest for life. He adores attention. He would absolutely love if he was allowed to go on walks, but he is not currently allowed and is on restrictions until he’s gained his strength and is healthier. Last week, he was not strong enough to climb one or two steps without collapsing. This week, he trotted up a whole flight and back down while I was changing his blankets (don’t worry had a close eye on him at all times). He’s curious, he’s happy, and soon he will be healthy. He has had only one accident. He has a huge horse sized crate with blankets and a bed inside to keep him comfy during his rest time.

His only real need to improve—he cowers when someone walks up to his crate initially as if he’s not sure of intention, and he bows his head and makes himself small as if he’s going to be hit if movement is too quick. But we will heal his heart, change his expectations, and let him know only love.

We truly appreciate all you all have sent, all the help with the vetting, and all the love and prayers, the outpouring for him, for Lincoln and for Nigel. And we know they appreciate you too. Because without you, there can be no us.

We are offering two puppy yoga classes! Bring yourself and your mat, and we’ll provide the puppies, fun and light refreshments.

First session:

10am-11am yoga with Instructor Michelle from Latrobe, 11-12 light refreshments and extra playtime

Second session:

4pm-5pm yoga with Instructor Heather Black of Bedford, 5-6pm light refreshments and extra playtime.

Aysa Update: Foster Mom Becomes Forever Mom

Aysa joined us on Sept 16 2022 through the combined efforts of CAnine REscue - CARE Inc., Joey's PAW , Code3 Animal Rescue Aviation Team, and Pilots N Paws .

Aysa was found in April of that year, in the state of Indiana, with a catastrophic spinal injury. She was found with her deceased mother, both suspected hit by cars. Aysa was taken to a vet clinic…. And there she lived in one of their kennels. At the end of august, Joeys Paw had been contacted by CARE , to see if they knew anyone who could help. Aysa is completely paralyzed from the bottom of her ribcage down, and If no one could be found, Aysa would be euthanized, as living in a kennel at a vet clinic is not a life she should be experiencing. Joeys Paw asked us, we said yes.

Mark took up the task of planning her freedom flight and his team at Code 3 worked together with Pilots and Paws to get Aysa from Indiana to PA. Every pilot fell in love with her and we can’t thank them enough for getting her to us.

When Aysa arrived that Friday evening, she went home with the director to be assessed, evaluated and to await her foster being ready for her. Upon arrival we noticed she had a very infected sore on her hip. It was cleaned, treated. But it was concerning. Over the weekend, we learned she loved baths. She needed her bladder expressed, but she could defecate on her own. She Wasn’t fond of other dogs, wasn’t real happy with new people in her space she didn’t know….. but her resilience and strength shone through every moment.

The next week, she met her new foster mom, and she really didn’t care for her at first, but I told her that Aysa would be fine, have faith. And she was. She went to the vet where we learned how catastrophic her injuries were. And that they could not be fixed with surgery, with any treatment. At that point in time, her leg was ravaged with infection. We honestly didn’t know if her prognosis was good at all.

And then Aysa said, hold my ball.

Her leg healed, other cuts and infections creeped in, but those healed too. She got a scooter that she hated, a drag bag she’s not fond of, a set of wheels she only tolerates for short burst of time (the way her back is broken, she can not sit straight in a chair), a stroller she loved taking rides in, and an insane amount of toys, treats, and love.

She bonded with her foster mom, they settled into a routine, they became two halves of a whole.

Aysa got stronger. She learned she likes to walk on her front legs. And while a lot of people are horrified at that—we don’t make her do it. We have given her EVERY tool for assistance getting around and she gives us a middle toe. She wants to do it on her own. She’s determined. She’s full of fire. She’s courageous and she’s a survivor.

We’ve been posting her for ten months—not one inquiry. So we sat down and had a very long and very serious talk about Aysa’s future.

And here is what has been decided.

Aysa will be staying with her foster mom… no longer a foster, but as a forever. She’s been home since the week after she arrived. They have their routine down. She is safe, loved, cherished, extremely well taken care of, and she is most importantly….. happy.

We do not know what Aysa’s future holds in regard to how long she’ll continue being the firecracker she is, but we do know she won’t know even one second without love and kindness.

Aysa will remain under Abby’s Angels for her vetting for life because we do not know what time will bring. So we may still ask for things for her from time to time. We hope you’ll help if needed.

And in the meantime—thank you to her foster, now forever mom. For loving her, for saying yes, for caring for her, for being the savior she needed and always will. We appreciate you and are so grateful and extremely happy for you both.

To Joeys Paw, Code 3 Animal Rescue …. Thank you for your continued assistance with everything this girl has needed. We couldn’t have been what she needed otherwise.

The first three photos are her now with her forever mom. The rest are the first we ever got of her, and her journey the first week until she went home… we just didn’t know it yet.

Seven New Arrivals - Extra Care Needed

We had seven new arrivals today. Emily, Rory, Lorelei, Tokyo, Ivy, Wednesday and Ebony. We recently posted a wishlist , but it is no where near filled, and when these kiddos arrived, we realized quickly that they need some extra care. Please note we have already ordered what we needed, but do need to replace the funds for what we spent.

Most are very underweight, a few extremely so, and so we immediately ordered some extra NutriCal, Fortiflora & Proviable and some ProPlan Puppy for each of them to help them gain the weight they need to be within healthy levels. This put us back about 800 bucks to cover all seven dogs. We also had to restock our supplies of Panacur and Strongid (both dewormer) and that set us back another 450.

So, if you are able to provide ANY help, it is so very appreciated. These babies deserve the best we can give them to help get them healthy and ready for the lives they’ve so deserved.

An Unexpected Surprise: Kong Joins The Haven

Today was filled with unexpected surprises.

I saw a post of a friend last evening looking for a fospice home. She got details and learned that the local humane society had a senior boy with a large tumor that the vet who examined deemed inoperable. But we knew we couldn’t let him stay in a shelter in a kennel for the rest of his days.

So, she went to meet him this morning and do an assessment and after one look, knew we could not leave him there.

We welcome Kong to the Haven. He’s a ten year old pittie, with a tumor that will be assessed by a separate vet early next week. He also presents with some pretty evident arthritis, some urine burns on his tumor (it swings when he uses the bathroom), some rough, raw skin, some worn down teeth, and some cloudiness in his eyes. He has been started on some probiotics, skin supplements, joint supplements, is on Gabapentin and we also started Rimadyl.. If removal is an option, we will proceed. If it is not, he will know he is loved before he is ready to leave this world for the next.

He was an unexpected addition so will need a few things to get him settled:

Some XXL belly bands (these help hold the tumor up so it isn’t hanging or pulling on his skin).

Proceeds from the sale of this raffle will go towards the care and costs of Special Needs dogs within Abby’s Angels Animal Haven.

Abby’s Angels Animal Haven is a not for profit, foster-based dog rescue located in South Central Pennsylvania. At Abby’s Angels, we dedicate and commit to saving as many lives as possible, providing quality of life to those who are losing their battles and providing all the love and support that each animal deserves.

The Pawtograph on this edition of the print belongs to Aysa . Aysa is a 1 year old, female German Shepherd who paralyzed from the waist down.

Aysa is currently in the AAAH foster program . There she is loving, curious, happy, and playful. She enjoys warm baths, stroller rides, stuffies, Benebones, exploring in her wheel chair, and snuggling with her foster mom.

Abby's Angels Animal Haven has also been dealing with a very severe Canine Respiratory Illness that has resulted in very serious cases of pneumonia and bacterial infections for some of our dogs. The illness and secondary infections have been life threatening for some. Two have required lengthy critical care stays at an emergency clinic.

Special Needs among other Angels have included the treatment of Addison disease in puppies, amputations, chemical burns, C-sections, emergency surgeries, hospitalizations and severe orthopedic injuries.

The list is endless. So is the need.

Support Abby's Angels Animal Haven by attending our first Woof-Stock hosted at the Bedford Elks Country Club on Saturday, January 28th 2023 beginning at 12pm.

4 of our new arrivals showed up this morning!

They are right off the van from SC so are unsure of what is happening and will have some time to settle into their foster homes before we know more about them.

Any help for their care is appreciated as they still need vetting and resources while with us.

Levy, Leebye, ChooChee, little boy, munchkin. My handsome, sweet, friendly, playful, sometimes neon eye little boy.

My teeniest boy who survived. A mere 8.1 ounces. You were a joy to watch every single moment. You were vocal during tube feedings, but enjoyed your sponge baths immensely. My middle of the pack pup, with such a big heart. You were an instant cuddler, and that has not changed at all. You spent hours sucking on my fingers, on pacifiers, while the others sucked on you.

They sucked on you and Leah to the point that at just over weeks old, I had to separate you two from the rest so that your genitals could heal. I had two heated playpens taking up most of my living room. I fretted endlessly. I worried. I checked your temps often, I made sure you were warm. You all got to play at feeding and playtime, but I worried about keeping you two separate.

As it turns out, it was an unnecessary worry. Two weeks later, you both healed enough to join the others and you all got your very own room in the den, to grow, to play, to flourish. And that you did.

You have always been up for snuggling, for cuddling, for giving kisses. Yet one more thing that has stayed with you as you’ve grown into a 31 lb. meatball. And I hope that never changes.

You have been amazing with everyone you’ve met— dogs , kids, adults, cats. You love to play outside, you’re intelligent yet stubborn, You are the best sitter I know.

You have now been my little sidekick for 5 months and two days. 155 days. Thirty shy of half a year.

It has been one of the hardest experiences of my life, first working hard to make sure these teeny tiny preemie puppies survived, and then wrangling you all up daily and making sure you were safe, well rounded, and loved, and then letting each of you go on to your forever homes . It has been filled with emotions—sadness, panic, worry, stress, laughter, joy, fear, anger (not at you guys), irritation, happiness—but most of all—love. So much love that each time one of you left, my heart shattered more and more until I was sure there was none of it left.

I know that each of your siblings are in amazing homes, with amazing parents who love them so extremely much. But letting them walk out the door, a being who had been a part of my very fabric of life every moment, was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.

You, my dear Levi, we have been back and forth on endlessly until the week after Hannah left. When we started out, I knew I would have to let each of you go on to new homes. I knew my heart would shatter. I knew it would be hard to piece back together.

We don’t need another dog. We don’t need the expense. We don’t need the chaos, we don’t need another set of dirty feet leaving paw prints all over the house, another personality to integrate and develop, another training to go through, another crate taking up space.

But here we are. We definitely don’t NEED another dog. But you aren’t just any dog. You are the last of my miracle babies. The final gift of my grand opus. The last remaining shard of my heart that hadn’t broken off in this journey. And you are perfection.

I know that Bentley won’t be around forever. He may have 6 months, 2 years, or five… there’s no way to know. But what I do know, is you fit. And I can not have a whole house full of female dogs when he is no longer with us. None of us would survive that.

So thank you, Levi, for bringing the final member of our pack. We saved the grand finale for the most special boy, one who reminds me so much of my dearest Abby. Not in appearance, but in personality. Who reminds me of my Frenchie boy who didn’t get as much time in this world as he should have. Who IS genetically related to my beautiful Clover. Who has the best mixture of sweet and spice.

You are part of the strongest, bravest, toughest, most well behaved, sweetest, courageous and resilient litter of pups I have ever known. Thank you for allowing me to be an part of your journey , and thank you for choosing me to be your mom.

Let's Talk About Aysa | Update 9/22/2022

Aysa recently flew from Indiana to Pennsylvania to join us at the haven.

Aysa recently flew from Indiana to PA to join us at the haven. We were aware she had paralysis and we were prepared to try everything we can if it would help. Water therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, surgical intervention by a specialist. Whatever we could if there was a chance to make an improvement.

Joey's P.A.W was prepared to get her wheels to get her moving and upright. For whatever she needed, for every growth cycle, for life.

Here’s what we were not prepared for.

It is suspected that Aysa was hit by a car. We don’t know for sure. We never will. When she arrived last Friday, she had a pretty angry looking pressure sore. This can happen much like bedsores in people. We started her on antibiotics, antibiotic cream, cleaning with antibacterial and anti fungal shampoo. And then we awaited her appt at our vet yesterday.

Aysa had an exam and X-rays completed. They are included below. A dogs spine is comprised of four separate sections. The cervical spine in their neck area, the thoracic spine that is above their ribs, lungs, and heart, the lumbar spine over their remaining internal organs, and then the pelvic area.

Aysa suffered catastrophic damage to her thoracic spine. Three to four of her vertebrae were damaged so badly that when they healed it’s as if there is now one big ball of bone. This is irreparable. No matter what we could attempt, or wish to try…. There is no fix. There is no answer to making it better. Because of where the damage occurred, she does still have some feeling in her legs. She can feel her feet being touched. She stretches her legs out from time to time, she will kick if her toes are tickled. And while you may think that’s promising, the truth is… that’s actually worse than having no feeling at all for her. Because she can feel pain. She has no way to adjust her body to not be painful due to the damage inflicted in her thoracic spine.

In the next X-ray, the area circled shows that she is already experiencing calcification areas and already has arthritis. This technically should not be possible because arthritis is generally caused by wear and tear or overuse of the joints and bones over time. She can’t and hasn’t used those areas of her spine in a long time.

In the following X-ray, the blue area is basically what a normal section of spine should look like. Dense, full and solid. The purple circle, shows where her spine has lost massive bone density. You can almost see through them.

In the last X-ray, it shows her pelvis. Her hips suffered no damage or fractures. However her legs have grown abnormally. Her right femur is crooked. Her tibia and fibula have not properly formed. This also is unfixable.

Her sore was examined and we were given more antibiotic cream and antibiotics. This sore is so deep and so massive that it will be a lifelong struggle. It is the side she feels most comfortable lying on. It more than likely won’t ever fully heal.

Putting her in a rear wheelchair very well could make her spine worse because of the placement of the injury and the way it has healed itself. She is 100% weight bearing on her front end.

So. What is her prognosis?

First and foremost, Management. She has been placed on rimadyl for inflammation and pain. She is on antibiotics. She will have her wound cleaned and redressed daily.

The always amazing Joeys PAW immediately changed gears and is sending her a quad wheelchair that will arrive Friday. This will take the pressure off her front end as well. And then, they are having a custom chair made just for her. To her specifications.

They also supplied a stroller that we can line with padding to take the pressure off her wound, and so when she’s not in her chair but still wants to be out, she doesn’t have to do the work.

Here is the hard part though. She does not currently show that she is painful, even if we know she has to be feeling some. Dogs have this innate ability to mask pain. So, we will watch for changes. We will monitor her closely each and every single day. And we will make sure that every day she is here, will be one she is cherished.

If a time comes where we see that her days are not filled with the happiness and joy that she currently possesses, that her days are getting harder and more painful, her days are a struggle, we will not let her live in pain. We will make a decision at that time, to free her of a body that is failing her in ways no one’s ever should. We will not let this beautiful being suffer needlessly when we know how radiant her soul is. And it is. She is amazing. And she is beautiful. And our hearts already love her so incredibly much.

We named her Aysa because it means beautiful. It means radiant. It means healer. While we can not heal her physical body no matter how badly we may wish to, we can be certain that her heart will never again need healed.

Aysa will require much medical care and if you are in any way able to help with that, it is appreciated.

Aysa Coming to AAAH Through a Team Effort

Amazing feats can be accomplished, when animal groups come together to help souls in need.

A few weeks ago we were asked for help. In April, a young shepherd pup was found with her deceased mother who had been hit by a car. It is assumed she was also hit by the same vehicle. A vehicle that left her paralyzed from her hips down.

She was taken to a vet who believed she stood a chance. They performed some laser therapies, did X-rays, vaccinated her, and worked with her. And waited for someone to be able to help. No one could.

She has lived her life at the vet clinic for the last 5 months, and unfortunately she can’t spend the rest of her life there. That is no way for a dog, especially a young one, to experience life. She is about 10.5 months old. If no one was found, euthanasia was the only option left. They continued to search for someone to help.

Thankfully, we are blessed and lucky enough to be that someone. And we are thankful her vets never gave up on her.

They named her Hope. We have already had a Hope and we never use the same name twice because each and every dog is unique and deserves to have something of their very own, even if it’s not yet a family.

So over the last week we have spent hours brainstorming for a name that would fit her perfectly. What we came up with is Aysa. Aysa means beautiful, radiant, healer. We chose it because she is undeniably beautiful, her heart and spirit radiate love, and even if we can’t heal her body, she has the potential to heal the hearts and spirits of everyone she meets, and all the dogs that come along after that are similar to her.

Aysa will be joining us next weekend with the assistance of Code3 Animal Rescue Aviation Team and Pilots N Paws . She will fly from Indiana to Pennsylvania. We are so extremely grateful to be having their assistance (and they went above and beyond to make sure there is ground transportation should the weather not Cooperate) to ensure she will arrive to her destination safely.

We are also honored and so thankful to Joey's PAW who will be supplying Aysa with new wheels each time she grows until she is finished growing, a drag bag, and other mobility items necessary for her success.

Of the puppies that remained a few days after your chaotic start to life, you were the largest girl. Born at 9.2 Oz, dropped to 8.8 by the following morning…and there you stayed for quite a few days.

The other puppies started sucking on you and Levi, so much so, that at two weeks old we moved you both to a separate area so that your genitals could heal as they had become infected.

You were the most vocal during tube feeding, screeching so loud at times that I had no idea sounds that loud could come from such a tiny little being. You fought me and were the strongest. As you grew, you became the quiet one. The peaceful one. The one who wanted held the most. The one who also went off and had me searching for you time after time because you would find the tiniest little nook and tuck yourself away from the chaos of the other pups. Girl needed her beauty rest. And it has done you well.

You didn’t cause trouble, you stayed in the middle of the pack and went with the flow. You always waited until last to eat, whether because you wanted to sneak in extra cuddles and snuggles or because you were not the competitive type with your brothers and sisters remains a mystery. I think a little of both.

You were always the most timid in new situations, and I respect that. It’s a huge world out there and after the start you had, I can’t say I would want to leave the safety of my known world either…. But with clovers help, you flourished.

You are playful, you are brilliant, you are gorgeous and my heart overflows with love for you. It always will.

You are part of the best litter of pups I’ve ever had. You’re a fighter, you’re strong, and you will be amazing.

You fought hard—a mom who rejected you, being born too early, not being strong enough to drink, dehydration issues, bacterial and fungal infections from not having a proper immune system, subQ fluids, learning to suckle and everything else along the way. You fought for this life.

People tell me I’ll miss you, and honestly that irritates me because of course I will. I have loved you, cared for you and we both worked extremely hard to get you to where you are. Sleepless nights and days, exhaustion, tears, frustration…. I’ve never in my life had to put so much effort every moment into anything as much as I have with you.

You and your siblings—you are my opus. My lifetime orchestra, the most beautiful Melody of the story of life that I have ever known.

Will I miss you? How could I not? I was there when you were born and every moment since, until you went to your forever. 13 weeks and two days of loving the most perfect being.

I wish you the absolute best life you could ever dream of baby girl. And I know you’ll have it ��

Becoming A Dog Foster - We Need You!

We need dog fosters to help more dogs.

These faces are just a tiny number of dogs who are waiting on a foster home to say “yes.” Some are cat friendly, some most are dog friendly, but all need a chance. All need someone to open their home and give them a place to crash for a few weeks or a few months depending on their needs.

We provide everything. Crate, food, medical care, support, advice, leashes, collars, prevention…. You just need to have a space in your home that’s safe and comfy for them, the ability to take photos each week, and communication with us as to how they are doing and what they and you need.

Can you say yes? You don’t only save their lives, you save the one of the next dog waiting for space at the shelter they’ll be pulled from.

Fostering is a blessing we can not exist without. Please consider being a part of something life changing. For them, and for you.

And if you can’t, please share to try to help us find people who can.

Who Is Abby? Her Legacy Carries On

Abby was rescued from a local shelter in September, 2008 at 2 years old. She was beaten, used as a puppy maker and abandoned, tied to a shelter fence on a cold Pennsylvania night. She went on to live with her adoptive mom for the next 9 years and 8 months, bringing joy and leaving happiness where ever her four paws took her.

Abby gained a four legged brother, Bentley, in 2012 and loved him more than anyone else. 2014 brought a four legged sister, Prada, who was rescued from New York after being poisoned and developing pyometra. Early in 2015, a hospice foster entered our home and began our passion for hospice fostering. Frenchie, a 2 year old Staffordshire Terrier, had a balloon valvuloplasty surgery to help heal his malfunctioning heart. Frenchie had tricuspid dysplasia, pulmonary stenosis and congestive heart failure. The valvuloplasty afforded him 14 months with us and Abby, before he passed on February 28, 2016.

In 2015, Abby was diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer. She underwent surgery to remove four masses. After a successful surgery and recovery, she beat cancer. Her “I beat cancer” photo was shared on Facebook and went viral. We were contacted by the Dodo for an interview and she was featured as an article on their website.

In 2017, Quinn, another hospice addition, came to live with us. Quinn had a severely malignant diagnosis of Mast Cell Cancer. She had surgery on her back leg in February to remove a huge tumor and was given a grim diagnosis of maybe 3 months. She arrived in March and in June had emergency surgery for pyometra. During her surgery, a mass was found in her spleen. It was biopsied and was not cancerous as had been thought, and her prognosis was thought to be better than anticipated. We had aspirations done of a few bumps on her head and body in July, and unfortunately the cancer had become even more vicious. We planned for surgery to remove the sites, but they just kept spreading rapidly. We lost Quinn on August 6.

Throughout all of the fosters, temporary stays and new additions, Abby loved and accepted every single being who stepped over our threshold. She viewed life as a playground filled with love and happiness and did her best to brighten the lives of all she met.

In April, 2018, Abby had a devastating seizure that lasted over 20 minutes. She lost her ability to see and hear for over 4 hours. She was in a panic and nothing we could do could help her. We rushed her to our vet who gave her medicine to help her. We were afraid that after such a long seizure, her brain would be affected. She came home the next day and was more or less back to herself for a few days. A week later, she had another seizure. We started her on phenobarbital in hopes that we could get ahead of the attacks and improve her quality of life. She improved for a few weeks and then again we lost ground. She lost the ability to control her movements, her appetite was sporadic and she lost her sense of self. She could never get comfortable and whined constantly, not knowing if she had to go outside, was hungry, wanted to sleep or wanted to be held. We did all we could to comfort her and help her, but felt helpless.

In late May, we woke up in the morning to her having extreme vomiting and diarrhea. She could not even lift her head. We cleaned her up, made her comfortable and gave her pain meds. I left for an hour to get work situated so I could come home and spend the day with her. When I arrived back home, she was laying in her own vomit and diarrhea and could not move. I cleaned her up and laid down beside her. I stroked her head and told her if it was time for us to let her go, it was ok. We would be ok. She would be ok. And that we loved her more than life. She got up, licked my face and went to wait for her leash. We spent the day together doing all the things she loved, seeing the people she loved and making her last day, the best day.

That afternoon, I said goodbye to the best soul I had ever met. That afternoon, I lost most of my heart and most of my own soul. That afternoon, I vowed to live the rest of my life honoring her in the best way I knew how.

This is how I can do that. Saving lives, wanting to make this world a better place for animals , giving them a chance....that is my purpose. That purpose was inspired back in 2008, when I laid eyes on a scrawny, almost hairless, long tongued Boston Terrier-Pit Bull Mix who stole my heart and showed me my life’s passion and my reason for being.

Abby’s Angels Animal Haven is now her legacy. We specialize in hospice care and terrier & bully breeds, although we will love and accept any breed. We thank you for reading our backstory, and for all the support. Without people believing in our purpose and donating time and energy as well as monetary and physical donations, we couldn’t fulfill our mission. So thank you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us remember our girl the best way we can. Thank you for choosing to help us save as many lives like hers as possible.
